Family Support Blog #15
Do you feel isolated being a parent?
Are you struggling with your child/children?
Do you feel you have no-one to talk to?
Do you feel you have wisdom to share with other parents?
Have you looked at other platforms or forums and still not got the help you need?
Do you feel up to the task of starting an informal ‘Parenting Forum?’
I remember standing in the playground and feeling very alone, not confident enough to ask other parents if they are struggling like me.
My reason being they might judge me being a bad parent.
Little did I know that most of them felt the same as me.
Although I said ‘’Hello and goodbye’’ to some of the parents, I longed to say, ‘’Do you fancy a coffee?’’ but not confident enough to do so.
I decide one day that I would smile and say ‘’Good morning, you alright?’’ That parent smiled and said ‘’God it was such a rush this morning’’ to which I agreed.
Each morning we would greet each other and expand on that conversation. A few weeks later, I got the courage to ask the parent did she want to grab a coffee.
Slowly but surely our little group expanded and we started to feel comfortable with each other.
We exchanged ideas, what worked, what didn’t. Our friendship grew, we started a Family/Carer group to organise fundraising for the school ( Xmas, Easter and Summer Fetes)
I felt part of something, I had a purpose and more importantly I did not feel alone. We shared our experiences on parenting, relationships, future goals, we were our own cheerleaders.
Here is a poem I saw recently and it really struck a chord with me.
So, if you see a smile begin,
Don’t leave it undetected,
Let’s start an epidemic quick
And get the world infected.
Think about that for a minute……..
How wonderful is it to get a smile and a perfect conversation starter.
In the morning at the school gate give a smile it’s the perfect conversation starter.
