Tony Gorton, Chair of CHEXS, set an inspiring tone for the evening with his foreword. Reflecting on the charity’s milestones, he quoted Martin Luther King Jr.: “All labour that uplifts humanity has dignity and importance and should be undertaken with painstaking excellence.” Tony emphasised the hard work behind the statistics in the annual report and praised the dedication of CHEXS staff, volunteers, and supporters.
Financial Update
Ben Booth, CHEXS Treasurer, provided an encouraging financial report, highlighting a seventh consecutive year of income growth. The charity’s income for the year reached £485,759, an increase of £68,473 from the previous year, largely driven by fundraising efforts and grants such as the Henry Smith award. Despite increased expenditure, CHEXS ended the year with a modest surplus of £5,046, ensuring financial stability to meet growing community needs.
CEO’s Address
Pete Maiden, CHEXS CEO, discussed the challenges facing vulnerable families due to the cost-of-living crisis and school budget cuts. He underscored CHEXS’s mission to bridge gaps in education and opportunity, stating: “Together, we are transforming lives and empowering the next generation to overcome adversity and achieve their dreams.” Pete highlighted the charity’s multifaceted programs that build life skills, family support, and community engagement.
Achievements and Impact
The AGM celebrated an array of impressive achievements from the past year:
- Family Support: The team supported 165 families, issued 136 foodbank vouchers, and facilitated parenting workshops attended by 102 parents. Initiatives like “Real Talk” provided a platform for over 60 parents to share challenges and access expert guidance.
- Children and Young People’s Support: The CHEXS GROWTH programme hosted 196 sessions, benefiting 343 primary and 231 secondary students. Projects ranged from leadership training to creative activities, with participants reporting improved confidence and emotional well-being.
- Community Engagement: Events like the Easter Hunt, which attracted over 1,000 families, and CHEXS Day, raising £1,523, exemplified the charity’s ability to bring people together for meaningful causes.
