Family Support Blog #24 – Navigating the Digital World with Your Teen or Tween
February: Navigating Digital Parenting in 2025
Navigating the Digital World with Your Teen or Tween
As its Internet Safety Day this month, we thought here at CHEXS that it was important to write about keeping our children safe online. Navigating the digital world with your teen or tween can feel like embarking on an uncharted adventure. But fear not! With open communication, clear guidelines, and a sprinkle of tech-savviness, you can help your child explore the online realm safely and responsibly.
1. Building Open and Honest Conversations
Start by discussing your child’s online activities. Ask them about the apps they use, the games they play, and the friends they interact with online. By showing genuine interest, you encourage them to share their digital experiences and any concerns they might have. Remember, it is a dialogue, not a monologue!
2. Set Clear Boundaries Together
Collaborate with your child to establish rules for internet use. This could include setting time limits, designating tech-free zones in the house, or agreeing on appropriate online behaviour. Creating a family agreement ensures everyone is on the same page and promotes a sense of responsibility. (internetmatters.org)
3. Emphasise the Importance of Privacy
Teach your child to protect their personal information. Explain why they should not share details like their full name, address, or school online. Encourage them to use privacy settings on social media platforms to control who can see their posts and to think twice before sharing photos or updates.
4. Discuss the Reality of Online Interactions
It is crucial for your child to understand that not everyone online is who they claim to be. Discuss the risks of interacting with strangers and the importance of not meeting online acquaintances in person without parental guidance. Empower them to say no if something feels off.
5. Encourage Critical Thinking
Help your child develop the skills to evaluate the content they encounter online. Discuss how to identify trustworthy sources, recognize misinformation, and understand the potential impact of their digital footprint. Encouraging them to think critically fosters safer and more responsible online behaviour.
6. Understanding AI and Its Impact on Online Safety
With the rise of generative AI, it is essential to educate children about its capabilities and potential risks. AI tools can generate realistic images, videos, and even conversations, making it harder to differentiate between what is real and what is fake. Encourage your child to question the authenticity of online content and be cautious of AI-generated media that might manipulate or deceive. For more information on how AI impacts children’s safety, check out NSPCC’s guide on Generative AI and Children’s Safety.
7. Stay Informed and Involved
Keep yourself updated on the latest apps, games, and online trends popular among teens and tweens. This knowledge will help you guide your child more effectively and understand the digital landscape they navigate daily.
8. Highlight the Role of CHEXS Family Support Team
Remember, you are not alone in this journey. The CHEXS Family Support Team is here to assist you with any concerns or questions about your child’s online safety and overall well-being.
