CHEXS Growth Programme: Empowering Young People Through Hands-On Learning!

Our young people have been absolutely smashing it this week on the CHEXS Growth Programme! At the halfway point, we’re reflecting on the incredible outdoor learning experiences and leadership activities that have helped shape their confidence, resilience, and aspirations.

Community Habitat Project: Learning, Growing, and Thriving

Forest Adventures at Fishers Green Under the guidance of our amazing volunteer Bob, our young people learned tool safety and took on the challenge of trimming brambles in the forest. Afterward, we visited the Bird Hide, where we spotted local wildlife and embraced the beauty of nature. Connecting with the outdoors has been a fantastic way to boost mental well-being.

Bow & Arrow Challenge Creativity and hands-on learning went hand in hand when our young people turned offcuts into their very own bow and arrow sets. This activity wasn’t just about fun—it taught valuable problem-solving, listening, and teamwork skills.

Forest learning in Action! Our young people tackled our Community Habitat project in Lee Valley, learning all about tool safety and the importance of protective gear like goggles and gloves. They demonstrated great enthusiasm and a strong work ethic—safety first, always!

The Goals of the Community Habitat Project

  • Encouraging children to step outside their comfort zones and think about their aspirations.
  • One-on-one mentoring to build confidence and set personal goals.
  • Reinforcing strategies for emotional resilience.
  • Showing that with dedication, enthusiasm, and support, everyone can achieve their goals.
  • Providing quiet time outdoors to reflect and improve mental health.
  • Strengthening community engagement through volunteering.

After-School Leadership: Building Confidence and Teamwork!

Thanks to BBC Children in Need, our After-School Leadership Sessions have been filled with excitement and valuable learning opportunities. Here’s a glimpse into what our young people have been up to:

The Tube Game Challenge This game tested teamwork, communication, resilience, and focus—and our young people absolutely nailed it! The cheers when they succeeded were unforgettable. One participant shared:

“I’ve loved today as I don’t get to do after-school clubs normally.”

Using our MTA Kit (Giant Meccano)! Using the MTA Learning kit, our young leaders worked together to build towering structures, putting their problem-solving and leadership skills to the test. The creativity and determination they showed were truly inspiring.

The Impact of Leadership Activities

  • Enhancing emotional resilience and supporting mental well-being.
  • Encouraging self-management, giving young people the tools to make informed choices.
  • Boosting confidence, self-esteem, and school engagement.
  • Developing leadership, teamwork, and problem-solving skills.
  • Providing a much-needed break from academic pressures while building life skills.

Parent Reflections: Real Impact, Real Change A parent of one of our young participants beautifully summed up the impact of our support:

“I know these sessions with him have a huge impact, and it’s a break from the pressure of school, which helps massively.”
