Preparing for the Transition to Secondary School

Transitioning from primary to secondary school is a major milestone for both children and their families. It can be an exciting time full of new opportunities, but it also comes with change, uncertainty, and emotional challenges. At CHEXS, we understand how important it is to make this transition as smooth and supportive as possible.

This month’s blog is here to guide you through key tips, helpful resources, and highlight how we support both children and parents during this time.

Understanding the Transition

Moving up to secondary school means new routines, new friendships, and a very different environment. Children may feel anxious about getting lost, coping with homework, or meeting new teachers. Parents might also feel unsure about how best to support their child while giving them the growing independence they need.

Recognising these emotions, and having a plan to manage them, can make a big difference.

How CHEXS Supports Your Child’s Transition

At CHEXS, our mission is to build strong foundations for young people to grow and succeed. Here’s how we support children through the transition to secondary school:
Our Children and Young People Team delivers bespoke transition sessions for selected Year 6 pupils, identified by their schools as those who would benefit most from additional support. These tailored sessions give children the opportunity to explore what secondary school will be like, discuss any worries, build confidence, and develop strategies to manage change.

Confidence and Wellbeing Workshops

Through structured workshops, we help children build self-esteem, emotional awareness, and resilience. Our team focuses on preparing children not just practically, but emotionally too.

P
arental Support

We know transitions affect the whole family. Our Family Support Team offers guidance and advice to help you feel confident in supporting your child.
We attend Parent Induction events at the new secondary schools to meet parents face to face and also hold dedicated parent workshops focused on helping children navigate the transition from primary to secondary school.

Our lunch and learn session on the 25th June 12-1pm on Transition is now live to BOOK

We will also be holding a Real Talk session, taking place soon in the Tesco Community Room (Brookfield Tesco, at the back of the main store), where parents can come along for an open chat, get advice, and enjoy a cuppa, keep an eye on CHEXS social media for the date!

Tips to Help at Home

Here are some practical ways to support your child as they move to secondary school:

1. Talk Openly
Encourage your child to share how they feel. Listen without judgment and reassure them that nerves are normal.

2. Visit the New School
If possible, attend open evenings or induction days. Walking the school site, meeting teachers, and understanding the timetable helps reduce anxiety.

3. Establish a Routine

Secondary schools often start earlier and expect more independence. Begin adjusting bedtimes and morning routines during the summer so the September start feels more natural.

4. Encourage Responsibility
Let your child practise packing their bag, reading a timetable, and managing homework. These skills will help them feel prepared and capable.

5. Talk About Friendships
Discuss making new friends, keeping in touch with old ones, and how to manage tricky social situations. Role-playing can be a fun way to build confidence.

6. Stay Connected with School
Make use of parent portals, newsletters, and parent evenings. Staying involved shows your child you care, even as they become more independent.

7. Promote Extracurricular Involvement
Joining a club or activity helps build new friendships and a sense of belonging, something that’s key during times of transition.

Supporting Children with SEND

Transitioning to secondary school can feel even more complex for families whose children have Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). At CHEXS, we provide a tailored approach to ensure these children feel prepared, supported, and confident.
 How CHEXS Helps:
  • Individual Transition Support: Our Children and Young People Team work one-on-one with children who may need more targeted help during the transition.
  • Planning with Families: We collaborate with parents and schools to ensure every child with SEND has a plan that reflects their strengths, needs, and concerns.
  • Emotional Support: Many children with SEND experience heightened anxiety. Our staff offer gentle, encouraging support to build comfort and self-belief.
