High Sheriff Of Hertfordshire Visited Our Children and Young People in Lee Valley
We were honoured to welcome the High Sheriff of Hertfordshire, Nicholas Buxton, to Fishers Green in Lee Valley to work alongside our children and young people as they helped cut back hawthorn and care for the natural environment. It was a truly inspiring day, and his visit highlighted the importance of community engagement, outdoor learning and the positive impact of nature on wellbeing.
What is the High Sheriffs Role
The High Sheriff is one of the oldest secular offices in the United Kingdom, with a history dating back over a thousand years. Originally responsible for maintaining law and order in the county, today the role has evolved into a ceremonial but highly respected position appointed by His Majesty the King. The High Sheriff acts as the Sovereign’s representative in the county for matters relating to the judiciary, support for the voluntary sector, community organisations and public services such as the police, emergency services and probation services. They also play an active role in supporting charities and recognising outstanding community contributions throughout their year in office.
Current High Sheriff 2025-2026
Nicholas Buxton is serving as the High Sheriff of Hertfordshire, and his theme for the year is “Nurture through Nature.” Born and raised in Hertfordshire on a family farm near Ware, Nicholas has a lifelong passion for the outdoors and believes deeply in the benefits that access to nature can bring to everyone’s physical and mental wellbeing. His focus this year is on promoting opportunities for people across the county to connect with green spaces and experience first-hand the restorative power of the natural world.
During his visit to Fishers Green, Nicholas didn’t just observe, he got stuck in with our young people, helping them cut back hawthorn and look after the space they care about. His involvement sent a powerful message about the value of teamwork, environmental stewardship and community spirit, and our young people were inspired by his genuine interest and encouragement.
It Was Such An Honour And A Privilege
To host the High Sheriff at this event. His active participation and heartfelt conversation with the children and young people made the day even more memorable. The experience reinforced the importance of investing in our young people’s development, especially through practical outdoor learning and environmental activities that build confidence, resilience and a sense of belonging.
We would like to extend our sincere thanks to Nicholas Buxton for taking the time to visit us, support our mission and celebrate the efforts of our children and young people. His presence brought real encouragement to the team and demonstrated how community leaders can make a meaningful difference simply by showing up, listening, and joining in the work.
