CHEXS COMPUTER SCIENCE WORKSHOPS

Launching Autumn 2025 – In partnership with The Royal Institution & funded by Google

Digital skills are more important than ever, but not every child gets the chance to explore coding, robotics or artificial intelligence in a way that feels exciting and accessible.

Our new Computer Science Workshops, developed in partnership with The Royal Institution and funded by Google, are designed to ignite curiosity, raise aspirations and build real digital confidence in young people aged 9–11.

Through fun, hands-on sessions delivered in local community spaces, children will explore the world of computing alongside inspiring sixth form mentors, gaining valuable skills for school, future careers, and life.

WHAT YOUR CHILD MIGHT DO

This is not a classroom lecture, it’s a discovery experience. Over six themed computer science workshops, Year 5 and 6 pupils will:

  • Build and programme simple circuits and sensors using micro:bits
  • Explore how AI and robotics work in the real world
  • Solve puzzles and code problems using logic, teamwork and creativity
  • Take part in interactive challenges, from robot wars to Mars rover simulations
  • Be mentored by sixth formers trained in confidence-building and peer support

Each session is designed to be hands-on, inclusive and confidence-boosting, with no prior experience needed.

WHAT CHILDREN GAIN

CHEXS Computer Science programme builds more than just tech skills, it builds belief. By the end of the workshops, children will have:

  • Increased confidence with technology and creative problem-solving
  • A better understanding of how computing links to everyday life
  • Improved skills in teamwork, communication and critical thinking
  • Real-world experience of coding, robotics, and future tech
  • Positive memories of being mentored, achieving, and presenting their ideas

Our aim is to show children that STEM isn’t out of reach, and that computing can be fun, creative and open to everyone.

WHY IT MATTERS

Many of the children taking part may not see themselves as “techy”, and may never have coded before. These workshops are designed to change that.

By placing role models, supportive challenges and real opportunities in front of them, we’re helping young people:

  • Widen access to computing
  • Support equity in education
  • Inspire the next generation of digital creators and problem-solvers

QUOTES FROM YOUNG PEOPLE INCLUDE:

"I give this session infinity out of 10!" “I liked programming the robots with my friend, it would have been even better if we could have taken the robots home” “I liked working with my friend and getting the robot to go around the obstacles.” “Something I liked was how nice the secondary children were.”
