FAMILY: Mother, Father, Child 1 Female 12 years old at Secondary, Child 2 female aged 9 at primary, Child 3 male 5 years old

Family Background

After a domestic violence allegation support was requested through assessment carried out by CHEXS. Parents divorcing however father refusing to leave the family. Father was drinking heavily and verbally abusive towards mother.

The children are showing emotional signs of distress and child 1 was especially scared. Child 3 was supporting her two siblings through this so as not to put more stress on their mother.

CHEXS support has been on-going throughout with strategies to communicate and live together initially and latterly through emails and texting to mediate between parents when things started to become difficult leading to a quick resolution of any issues without the children being involved or witnessing any arguments.

Description

  • Child 1 – Additional mentoring support in school along with counselling
  • Child 2 – CHEXS Referrers Setting Enrichment and one to one mentoring. School counsellor in place
  • Child 3 – Nurture group support and school support
  • Parents – Herts Young Homeless mediation – 8 weeks
  • Mother had IDVA involvement
  • CHEXS parental support – since May 2017 to present. Due to complete as soon as family separate

Outcomes and Impact

Family were able to communicate without shouting Children felt supported able to progress

Child 3 able to express himself more easily now. Home has become a more stable environment leading to better family relationships.

Children are more engaged in their school life Children are more able to socialise with their peers

Family Voice and Feedback

Child 2/3 school feedback – Children show raised self-esteem especially on subjects that are creative. Behaviour and mood are lifted. They are controlling emotions more.

You have put so much support in place to ensure the children were emotionally and physically supported throughout all of these. And I know I could not have gotten through the past two years without your support. Thank you!!

Child 2 – I feel lucky because I get to learn problem solving skills with CHEXS and have a boost for the future to try first and do teamwork. I have learnt to make new friends and get along with other people.
