Winners of Lee Valley Volunteer Group of the Year 2018
CHEXS have worked as a team transforming an area of the park from an overgrown thicket to parkland that is a pleasure to visit. This group comprises of a large number of young people ranging from ages 7 up to 16 managed by one of our partners. As a self-led group, they are given projects by the ranger team to support the work they do with young people who need to build confidence and discover the outdoors. One comment in the nomination said, “We were able to speak about the birds and wildlife that could be found there showing them that there is more to life than an iPad!”
It is also a testament that this project has been proven to give the young people an appreciation of their environment and community. Their hard work and participation in volunteering within such a beautiful surrounding is improving the emotional wellbeing of these young people by giving them something to be proud of and being part of their local community. We are also delighted to report that a past student has joined Capel Manor to become a tree surgeon as a result of the volunteering they did with the Lee Valley.
This is what some of the young people have said from the project this year:
“Out here doing all this is what I want to do when I am older.”
“I am proud that I can achieve things I didn’t think I could ever do.”
“I came out of my comfort zone: exploring the outdoors doing something different.”

We would like to thank our trustees, schools, partner organisations, dedicated volunteers & staff for their vision, enthusiasm, time and financial support. We are continually grateful as without this support, advice and guidance we would not be able to provide such a fantastic range of projects & meaningful experiences which have helped the children, young people, families and local communities we serve.
